Analysis: Islamic State Khurasan Releases New Detailed History of Uyghur Plight in China
The Islamic State Khurasan Province (ISKP) has been intensifying its hostile rhetoric against China in recent months and has launched multiple attacks targeting Chinese nationals in Afghanistan. Not only has ISKP ramped up its anti-China media activities, but the criticisms are becoming more and more nuanced. This was really first exemplified in an early September 2022 article titled “China’s Daydream of Imperialism” wherein ISKP analyzed China’s rise to great power status, its increasingly antagonistic relations with the United States, and its collision course with Islamic State forces. Prior to this, the Af-Pak branch mostly mentioned China alongside other states, devoted brief segments to Beijing in their videos and magazines, or created images with relevant text captions.
Now, ISKP has published another unprecedented look into China’s policies towards Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang and has released a flurry of propaganda content criticizing Chinese relations with governments throughout the Muslim world. This, of course, includes continued relentless new rhetorical attacks on Beijing’s dealings with the Taliban in Afghanistan. ISKP has carried on issuing threats and encouraging supporters to commit violence against China.
