Forces loyal to Wagner Group Chief Executive Yevgeny Prigozhin seized the key southwest Russian port of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday, June 24. Long critical of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and others over disagreements about the war effort, Prigozhin spoke openly against President Putin, claiming he made grievous errors when deciding to invade Ukraine. The rebellion was short-lived. Following reports that Wagner vehicles were fired upon in an aerial assault as they advanced toward Moscow, Prigozhin announced that he would accept exile in neighbouring Belarus.
