Islamic State East Asia Province Claims Attack in Southern Philippines, Aims to Retake Marawi
Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Catholic Mass on Sunday that killed at least four and injured 50 others. The bombing occurred at a university gymnasium in the city of Marawi in the country’s southern Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Southern Mindanao (BARMM), the site of a deadly 2017 siege that killed as many as 3,000 and displaced more than 17,000. The Philippines military stated that a manhunt for the suspect is currently underway and President Marcos claims the attack was perpetrated by “foreign terrorists”. The governments of the United States, Japan, Britain, China, and Canada condemned the attack.
